Why is it the Pope wears the clothes that he does?

I’m sure it all traces back to the days of Rome and the beginning of the Catholic church and there are reasons for it all. I’m just wondering why does he still wear it?
Culture is an interesting beast, especially when it comes to clothes and appeariance. This is a huge topic for me, but I never mention it. I’m really interested in why society dresses the way it does. Yes, I understand Fads and Trends, Marketing strategy and all those things have a huge affect on the way we see things. But, if you push all that crap aside what is left?

I think the Pope is stuck in an alternate universe, where all he sees is Roman culture from the early AD centuries. All those people crowded around him are actually wearing smocks, robes and sandals.
You know…I think I may be stuck between alternate universes, and the one I consciously inhabit. On the one hand (the alternate universe), I really like being comfortable, which means I’ll where old warn out clothes that have molded to my body over the conscious universe where I put on these tight clothes that constantly need to be adjusted and pulled to be comfortable…and why?…because our culture says it looks good…? I’ll take the alternate universe any day…old paint clothes and a stretched out t.
