I’ve always found it quite odd how lines are formed at stores when you go to buy something. You know the ‘Rush‘… All of a sudden everyone in the store seems to be at the check out at one time. It’s really weird.

I worked at a gas station for many years and i noticed a few things so this might help you to understand why it happens. My opinion is that it is all about time of day. If you ever get caught in a rush at a store, look at your watch. It will probably be within 2 or 3 min from :00, :15, :30 or :45. It’s a fairly basic concept, and totally understandable. Although, I’ll admit that at any given moment you could probably look at your watch and it will be with in range of those time. (that is beside the point here)
You’re buying a book when you look down and realize you just spent 20min reading about how your dog may have ADD. You think, “crap, i need to get these books before i go meet my dentist appointment.” When, Bam!!! there is everyone in the store standing right next to you wondering the same things. “There’s got to be more than 3 checkers in the store?”
Next time you get in one of these lines, check your watch and see if it fits. (theory excludes grocery stores)
